Rhinoceros Auklets are marine birds whose population changes help indicate the health of the Salish Sea ecosystem. They are particularly affected by changes in forage fish populations as top-level fish predators. Rhinoceros Auklets are in decline due to entanglement in discarded fishing gear and consumption of polluted fish prey. These auklets, along with most other members of their family, are on the Washington state and federal endangered species list.
